The reason is simple, while the 'good' names are all taken in the .com.au domain for businesses, you would simply get a double up of the same names and confusion about the structure. Subdomains and new extensions would be better. I'm not a fan, but sydney.au is a good example. Or biz.au ... I work at a school ... stpats.vic.edu.au ... how clever is that? the school name, the state, the industry, the country. It is a convention which means there is no memory required. Changing the convention would force people to remember domains, instead of following a convention. "My website is bmspanners.com.au" ... and you only have to remember the bmspanners. com.au means companies in Australia ... so what does the name.au mean? Is it only for international companies with a base in Australia? .com.au already does that. I love our structure. I think it is clever, and I think we need to maintain how it works in a logical manner. Come up with new extensions like ... .ag.au for agricultural or .rec.au for recreational or .me.au for personal sites - but leave the .au extension as it is. OK ... enough ranting :) Thanks for listening. Anthony Nunan
